I spotted the old desk in a thrift store and it just called to me. It's solid hardwood everywhere, but has no identifying marks anywhere that I could find. I'm thinking I'm going to buy it, but I know nothing about antique furniture. They want $60 for it, if it's worth more I'd flip it, if not I think a nice cherry red finish would look great on it. Can anyone give me an age and value? Thanks in advance!!!!

No, the bottom was pretty much in the same condition as the top. Here's a few more pics I took when I went back to look at it today. Thanks again for any information you could provide!

Go here: Bing or use Google Images
Look up different combinations like simple slant top desk, primitive slant top desk, old slant top desk, etc. Add the word vintage or antique into the search string now and then - it will bring up many different results.

I'm running out of data allotment, so can't search much more.

By the way, that doesn't look like hardwood to me. Very difficult to say for sure with your pics, especially as there is much stain, paint and grime, but sure looks like pine to me - maybe sugar pine? White pine? ...Hmm, Rhode Island - look at other pine antiques in your area and see what varieties of pines grow there.

Yes, it could very well be pine. Being completely ignorant about furniture, what I meant by all hardwoods, was no particle or press board. Thanks for posting those links, I didn't even know what keywords to use on a search!

Always glad to help out. Yeah, gets real old having to deal with that crappy fake wood all the time! It's heavy, and nearly impossible to repair! And forget trying to cut dovetails in the stuff!!

$60 is a fair price, I think. Not certain, as it has been FOREVER since I've had any dealings with any antique/vintage furniture. Seems most all of it is soaring so high that nobody would wanna buy it. So maybe $60 isn't a bad price. Would be worth twice that price if it had dovetails!!

Almost made a writing desk similar to this many years ago, except without the legs. But just couldn't get it through my thick skull that it'd be worth dragging around every time I moved (was in military at the time). So I bought a zippered laptop bag instead - you know, back when laptops were half the size of a vacation-size suitcase! :laughing7:
