Help with canterbury music stand

I picked this up at an auction recently. The top left rail may be missing although there is no damage from where it would have been. Were they designed to have only one side rail?
And someone is telling me the entire left side is missing? But i cannot see anything wrong with it apart from the possible missing rail.
