I use Garmin Foretrex gps units to find my way out of the woods during detecting runs. The 301 was my first and the compass that points to the starting point ( my car) goes by gps based pointing to the waypoint as compared to the direction of travel. The 401 and 601 ( my newest) is electronic and should point to the set waypoint at all times, even when at rest, provided the unit is held level.
My problem is that it is erratic when at distances of under half mile. The gps is actually more reliable. What I’m trying to find out is if you can set the 601 compass to be gps-based only. If not, I’d just assume sell it.
The directions in the manual are totally inadequate. If anyone can help I’d much appreciate it.
