not ... WHAT IS IT? / but ... WHO IS IT?

I recently posted this in the old photographs section, but thought I would try it here as well to give it more exposure. It is of an old 1800s? photo that I recently purchased because I thought the individual in it looked familar and might even be someone famous. I did quite a bit of searching on the internet but so far have not made a positive identification. It most likely is of a nobody, but then again it might just be someone famous. The closest resemblence to anyone famous I could find so far was that of the "Sundance Kid" ... a.k.a. Harry Longbaugh. (See 2nd insert). But the nose and other features are not quite right, although there are a few similarities. I guess this is just another case of wishful thinking and of an overactive imagination running wild.

However, if you do happen to recognize the individual, especially if it is someone famous like an old outlaw, sheriff, boxer, etc; please let me know. Just think of what something like this might be worth if it were the Sundance Kid?

The photo was tucked away among a hodgepodge of other old paper goods. The antique dealer I purchased it from just titled it "Old Photo." I did not share with him my reasons for buying it as I did not want him to think twice about it possibly being someone famous.

1. It measures 18" x 14"
2. It is hand colored (but appears unfinished).
3. There are no makers marks on it whatsoever.
4. It has penciled writing at the top (See 3rd insert). Which is a seperate piece of
paper glued onto the cardboard backing, and appears to read something like ...

" ess (mark/slash) Laine (gap) ive # 6 same as
binerz sent (gap) with -

I hope no one minds my posting this in the "What Is It?" section. I just thought it might be a fun and interesting topic of discussion and search.

Thanks.

Bat Masterson is one individual I did not think of. Here's a picture of him from around 1879. It's a possible, but I really don't think it's him. Although the stick pin in the tie is similar. After a while all of these guys with mustaches start to look alike! :tard:

Thanks for the suggestion.

!!! REWARD !!!

If someone absolutely, positively identifies the individual in the photo as someone famous and I sell it, I will pay the person who identifies it (providing they have substantiating proof of some kind) a 15% finders fee. Which translates to $150.00 per thousand. You can use this statement as my contract to pay the said amount.

As long as we are speculating and daydreaming here, we might as well have some fun and go all the way with it!

Maybe one of the photoshop experts out there could put the white derby on the subject photo. It is amazing the difference a hat makes. When I saw it, Bat just jumped up and screamed at me. Odds are, not. But it sounds good. By the way, I can't spell Bartholomew. Thank heavens for spell check.

HPD ~

Sounds good to me! We'll go with your "screaming intuition" about Bat Masterson for now and see what happens. Here are the two photos together for easier comparison.

Where did Val Kilmer come into this? Could that be his g-g-grandfather? Doc Holiday, by the way. I actually stopped in Glenwood Springs once and put flowers on his grave. Just to do it. Someone else felt the same thing.

DD812 ~

Good job with the photo editing. I have never downloaded the software I need to do that sort of stuff, but need to.

I have been looking for a match to the photo for days now and have pretty much given up on the outlaw/lawman aspect. My next phase is to check out oldtime boxers and other such sports figures. But it's starting to look like a wild goose chase. Hopefully someone will find something and I can sell it for a ton of money. We'll see.

Thanks to all. Please keep the photos coming, or any other ideas that might help.

Looks like a young Teddy Roosevelt (1858-1919?) Look at the collar and button!

I think with some colorizing, the BW Bat will match the subject Bat. Plus or minus a few years. The artists that colorized probably took some liberties, and there is more "depth" or 3-D than in the grainy black and white. If it isn't Bat, then it is his brother. Can't remember his name...... Wasn't quite as famous as the Earp Bros. Except for in Kansas.

The person looks to be between 28-34..can you use the clothes era to get a time span and figure out about when the person was born...this would eliminate some maybe's...Bat has the wrong ears...Theodore had Blue eyes..what color eyes are in the pic?
