Today's Brain Teaser #41 (17JUL2013)

If you are in Hawaii and dropped a bowling ball in a bucket of water which is 45 degrees F and dropped another ball of the same weight, mass and size in a bucket at 30 degrees F, both of them at the same time, which ball would hit the bottom of the bucket first?

Same question, but the location is in Canada?

The bowling ball dropped into the bucket of 45 degree water would. The bowling ball dropped into the bucket of 30 degree water would never hit bottom, its ice. Then again salt water can go down to 28 degrees or colder.

Red is right for Hawaii but wrong for Canada. PV =nRT In this case we are concerned about pressure and its effects on temperature. Hawaii is at sea level and the freezing point of water will be 32degrees. However, in Canada, the local atmospheric pressure varies widely. Given the average atmospheric pressure of Canada it would supress the freezing point of water to below thirty degrees. It is widely believed that the freezing point of water is 32degrees Fahrenheit and 212 degrees for boiling. This is true only at atmospheric pressure of 1 or sea level. Hence, the bowling ball in Canada will hit the ground at the same time in the two different containers. See aforementioned for results in Hawaii.

The ball dropped in the 45 deg, would hit first, because it was dropped first......same answer, late, with differerent thought process.

The one at 30 degrees would hit bottom first since there was no mention of that bucket containing anything. Don.......
Correct!

Both questions - same answer: The ball in the bucket of 45 degree F water hits the bottom of the bucket last. Did you think that the water in the 30 degree F bucket is frozen? Think again. The question said nothing about that bucket having anything in it. Therefore, there is no water (or ice) to slow the ball down.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's!
