I recently picked up this collection of 99 buttons, and am in the process of dismantling the display (as it was falling apart) and identifying the buttons, and possibly re-assembling a display if I don't sell everything. This is my first attempt at button collecting/selling/buying, so I don't know if I made a good deal or not, but it was too interesting to me to pass up. I have tentitavely identified some of the buttons, from a book I borrowed, although some of the backmarks are different. I am looking for anyone that may be able to help educate me. The best books on old Pre,Civil war and Post war buttons is either the Tice's Button book or Albert's
button book.I'll give you a few sites that is very helpful with your research.The back mark will age
just about any button.But,however you need to look at everything that is on the button.Such as
every dot between letters,capitol letters,ring of dots inside the backmark outside of the backmark
and the way every word is spelled.I hope this helps in ID'ing your buttons.I will also give you a site
that will help on ID'ing Civil war bullets.

I have named the pictures with a letter/number code that references for me the position on the original display. A couple of the buttons here have a push in the back, like the Mass one. let's have fun ID'ing!!!

these are all correct with the exception of 7K--which is 20th century. The mark "Waterbury Button Co." strictly a 20th c. backmark. (3C likewise is 20th c. as well.)
I don't know what #5 and #9 are, but I'd bet that Montana Jim would know.
I'm still working on #4.
Could you perhaps take a better photo of the back of 3A?
I will be able to provide the most help on the top two rows of buttons. The newer buttons in the rows below them I haven't had as much experience with.

The 3A Mass button says Scovill Mfg Co Waterbury around a ring of dots. it has a push on the back as well as corrosion, so I don't think I can get a better pic, but with a magnifyer, I was able to read it.

In the order you listed them, second set of buttons:
1I: I am not familiar with this button.
2H: Late 1800s Eagle button.
2F: This one was a difficult one to find, but I think I've got it: a Pennsylvania National Guard Staff Officer button, late 1800s.
2E: Looks like another PA Nat'l. Guard staff officer button, and it appears to be cuff-sized.
1A: The type of eagle and style of shield screams "Indian Wars" era, but the style of back suggests 20th c. reproduction to me. Is this a cuff size or a coat size button?

1J: Looks at first glance like a late 1860s-1870s navy button, but there is no dotted border around the inside of the backmark. The manufactured "push" in the back screams 20th c. to me, and I'd be willing to bet that it's later than the 19th c.
1B: This looks more like an Indian Wars era eagle button. It is earlier than 1902, but the shape of the shield is more consistent with 1880s and 90s eagle buttons.
1C: 1860-1900 general staff officer cuff button.
1D: With the superscript "o" on "Co." this is an 1870-1890 general staff officer button.
2I: Perhaps Civil War era or a bit later. The back threw me for a loop though--it looks like an iron back, and I don't know of any Union Eagle buttons right off that had iron backs.
