Picked this up for 50.00

They said they thought it was 1930's. Seems older to me.. Not sure how to tell. The wood is richer in real life and the handles have a nice patina. Can anyone tell me what it called, style and possibly value? Thanks!!!

I'd say 30's possibly 40's. if you look at the doors and drawer front, you can see the grain runs through them up and down
which tells me they're probably made from plywood. also the top has a wood grain top but a real dark edge, also a sign
that it's probably plywood. that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. it just means the age is about right
and for 50 bucks you got a real good deal. I saw one similar to that brought 325 dollars at auction

Does it have any labels on the inside of the drawers? If you could Id the maker it may add some $$ to your piece.

My Aunt and Uncle had one in a simular style. I believe it's early 40's pre-war. The handles are from that period also. It's right after the art deco period and that can be see by the curved side shelves. No marking may mean it was a middle class piece. And it's the discoloration of the drawer boxes and the type of joints that would help determine age.
But it's a real nice find anyways!

I'm no expert on furniture but from what I see I would think it dates in the 1930's maybe late 20's. No older than that though. I think you got good deal for $50.

That is a beautiful piece. I think it was classified as a Console. It could be used in dining rooms for china storage in the drawers and a large mirror mounted on the wall above it. Or it could be used behind sofas as a sofa table in large livingrooms as well as along one wall for console storage.

If I may suggest, get some Murphy's Oil Soap and follow the directions and give it a good cleaning inside and out; let it thouroughly dry; then apply Lemon Oil treatment inside and out. The Lemon Oil will rejuvenate the wood and lend a nice smell. If there is a place where the veneer is trying to lift along one edge, get a syringe from the drugstore and some quality wood glue and shoot some glue under the edge. Press down the veneer to push excess glue out; wipe off the excess glue with a damp cloth / paper towel; then put a piece of clear saran wrap over it then use a wood block and a clamp or some weight on the spot. Let it set for the period of time stated by the glue manufacturer and you'll have repaired the veneer. Do any repair work before applying the Lemon Oil treatment.

Don't worry about some scuffed areas and broken off pieces of veneer. That's character and adds to it's beauty. At least in my never humble opinion.

Don't think that veneer automatically means plywood was used as the base structure. Solid wood pieces, edge-glued, were used before plywood.

There may be manufacturing labels on the outside, bottoms of the drawers; on the outside of the drawer's back; or on the outside, bottom of the console's back piece.

Lurkin in this forum and saw your piece. Around here it's called "Depression Era" furniture...from the period of date...late 20's, early 30's.
The wood veneer was very popular and that style of medallion on the pulls is almost identicle to my bedroom dresser. Try finding an identicle replacement for one...whew!

Like shortstack said...probably a mfgr's mark inside the drawers somewhere.
