Anyone trying "Play It Again Sports"?

I know I mentioned this in a thread at some point last year but it's so easy to do I'm going to mention this again. Garage saling coupled with the sports store "Play It Again Sports" can make for a quick turn around on garage sale sports equipment. I believe this store is a corporation or chain that has many locations, at least up north where I am. They sell new equipment but also will either buy used equipment to resell or consign the equipment. The equipment one brings in must be in very good condition and modern in the sense that some things just become outdated and some may not...for example ancient roller skates or old hard shelled roller blades wouldn't be accepted, they are just not up to par with the new styles but an older quality baseball glove in good shape would still bring a good buck. What I like to do is buy all the good equipment I can for cheap at garage sales, hold the equipment until the are in season and then bring it in to consign... everything is usually gone in a 2 - 3 week period. Here's what happened to me 3 weeks ago,,, I had quite a bit of baseball/softball items like mitts, bats, cleats and one pair of womens roller blades that still had the price tag on them for $79 which had been reduced from the original price of $109 (I paid $10 for them) up in my attic from sales I had hit in September '09. I usually pay a couple, three bucks for gloves and bats that people hardly even use. Anyway I spent a total of $25 for all the items I brought in....they offered $63 for an immediate sale or $87 to consign it, I always consign... wait a couple weeks then collect for what I've sold. So I said I'll consign it, he goes into his computer and says it looks like I already owe you $79 for things you brought in this winter. I had forgot all about the wrestling shoes, Everlast punching bag, and ice skates I had consigned many months before!! The skates were Jackson brand womens figure skates which I paid $10 for and got $45 back on them (and they also get just as much so those skates sold for $90.00). The punching bag I got $25 and the wrestling shoes $9. The stuff I brought in 3 weeks ago was all sold as of today except 2 things so I got another check for $71. I brought in 7 more gloves and 2 bats today also which I just picked up Friday from saling, almost all from 1 sale. Paid a Total of $29 which got consigned again for $87. On the average I would say I easily triple every dollar I spend on sorts equipment I get at sales. It more than pays for all the driving, lunch, and other expenses of going out saling for a weekend. What a ramble...

That is a great idea, I will start keeping this in mind when garage sale hunting.

These used to be the items I never looked at. Great post

I went in one once to see what they pay on common yardsale sports finds and the owner kept lowballing what he would pay. Just wouldn't be wort the expense to sell to him.

I guess it all depends on the whose running the place. I just don't see why they wouldn't consign a good piece of equipment for 40-50% of the take when they have nothing in it but a little time. The aformentioned Jackson ice skates sold for $90. I got $45 of that, I had paid $10 so I made $35 profit...they made $45 profit. And just a side note I had placed these same skates in our local paper for $45.00 and they didn't sell, not even a call on them. They sat at "Play it Again" for about 5 weeks until the right buyer came in.
