What do you do with your gold/silver finds?

Seems there are a lot of people that after collecting enough metal, they send it to be melted, but is this the best way to make money? I would think that if after you calculated the price of a ring, you could sell it for a lot more at your own garage sale. Especially the 10k rings, some places dont even accept. Just guessing, but seems that even a slightly bent ring, would go for more at a garage sale, or flea market, than sold for melt.

I dont have enough gold for either, but when that time comes, I would like to get the best price. Also, if you are not getting anything for the stones at melt prices, wouldnt selling them at a garage sale, bring a better price? Or too much hassle?

I personally save or gift most of my finds, but when I need some money I usually sell the junkier stuff for scrap. Feebay is ok for this as long as you have good pics and description. Most used or damaged items bring near spot price. The jewelry has to be very unique to get more than melt.
If you had a store front or a good consignment store you may be able to get more for your item but don't forget to factor in time, commission and the chance that the item will sit on the shelf forever.

I either resell at fleamarket or I call the girl who buys jewelry for a little more then the pawn and gold buyer shops . Alot of times she will also give me a good bulk rate on the costume jewelry . This way i dont have to leave my house unless i want to sell at the fleamarket . For the most part garage sales should be your worst return on investment for jewelry because around here 80% of the guys and gals that buy at them are buying for resell and have a low price point there willing to pay .But it depends on your area and what your tring to get out of the jewelry . Im looking to double to triple my money . On most jewelry i quad my money . And for the most part i sell to kids or dealers on the costume jewelry at the fleamarket . Which means im under priced but i move my goods which keeps me in the money for other items .

My brother is a jewerler he buys mine he pays me so much a gram he had to collect so much before they will consider a delivery. They have minimun amounts they will take and keep upping the min. It has been a year since I last sold to him. I sold him things I bought years ago I basically got to wear them for many years and earned a profit for wearing it. Sold it cause with the economy the way it is eventually the folks that have no where else to turn will go after the easy marks folks that carry lots of cash and other valuables with gold that expensive you could have a chain that was a gift in the 1990s that is now worth over a thousand dollars and folks are walking around like it is nothing. Be careful we have some desperate people walking the streets that think that if you can't keep them from it then it is theirs. Not too hard to melt gold.
