    2 Antique Pirate Banks

Any speculation on value? I like them. I think copper not brass. Could be wrong.

    Thanks for any feedback.

    Yep, I was wrong. bronze.

Don't know, Cappy but I do like them as well. Might even be plaster dipped in bronze like baby shoes.

everything is worth something, but is it 1.00 or 1000.00? can you tell if they are chaulk or plaster?? one on right looks to be either chaulk or plaster.. are they really heavy?? you could always scratch the very bottom an see what they are made of

I have several vintage "bronzed" still banks. They come in all kinds of shapes and aren't really bronze, just coated white metal usually. They date from the 1940's- 1970's for the most part. Here is an example of one of yours on ebay-

    http://cgi.ebay.com/METAL-PIRATE-BAN...item41567c54b3

There are 2 more identical, this one is the highest (price) listed.

PS- Not saying that they don't make solid brass or bronze banks....just saying that the sitting one isn't one of them. Nice and vintage, I like them.

Thanks Diggummup. Inside they both are metal. I appreciate that you found a match for the pegleg. On the bottom both have holes to empty the bank. One is round, the other rectangular. The hole covers are missing however.
There is a coin slot on the back of the treasure chest of the pegleg, but none on the other. The standing one is much heavier also. Anyway...I might auction one them off...and of course I'll start at...a penny.

Cappy, thinking back to when we were kids, like Diggummup said, most were Base Metal with a copper overlay. Hope this helps you.?

Thanks Desertfox. I found out the standing pirate is actually worth a chunk of change. It is a Paul Herzel. And I think very rare..it is a bank, not a book end. The other is not a Paul Herzel...but it IS being auctioned off at the Cap Z Auction House...lol...yes..starting off at ONE PENNY!

Stick a strong magnet to it and see if it sticks. If it does its obviously a ferrous metal with a plating. If it doesn't then its copper, brass or bronze. From the pictures it looks bronze to me.

    Hello,

    Your banks are nice.

I have never seen the icollector.com site before. Do you prefer that over feeBay for collectibles?

    Thanks,

    Randyd
