price isn't to bad to start, but I think it's to high for most to jump in to bid... things like that you can hook more people with lower start prices an pay the extra 50 cents for reserve

Thanks! That's okay if it doesn't sell. I saw one sell March 22 like it for $189 + $18 for shipping. It had a couple of bidders. We'll see.... I personally don't like reserve prices when I am shopping unless they tell you in the description what it is and then you still need a second bidder to get it up to the reserve. I say put what you want on it to start with. I am still learning the Ebay ins and outs though. I do know how to buy

at current melt value you have 242.93 an take way 10% that is what my smelter charges leaves you with 218.64.. so I guess 199.00 isn't to bad.. but you may only get one bid an if silver goes over 38-39.00 you will have maybe lost out some money....

Hi, Excellent find Your plate may go higher than that for what it is, you never know. You will have two kinds of bidders competing, Antique lovers and the ones who are interested for the scrap value. Its always good two have both Paul
May you find God's grace in every mistake!

I don't normally do this but I would like to make a suggestion on your keywords for your listing
Antique sterling silver gorham plate scrap junk .925 bullion (bullion only if it fits)
These keywords give you a wider target audience.

It's over what I would pay but someone will probably bite. Is the weight in troy ounces or avoirdupois?

Your missing the whole point of a auction.. This point is to get as many people bidding to get wrapped up into buying this that they will forget about prices (prices become just numbers in their minds) that you end up with a high bid.. to offer a bid at 199.00 you might as well just saved your time an put a buy it now on it....

Re: Sterling plate for $8--thrift store find
Thanks everyone for the tips and pointers. Maybe if it doesn't sell I'll try it differently. Or I might just put it in the curio cabinet. Who knows? I still think I got a great deal at $8 and if it doesn't sell I'll consider it "money in the bank" for retirement. I have about 30 more yrs. to go......
