    $3.00 Bank and inside was......

    5 SILVER COINS !
Got this bank last weekend at a garage sale for $3 and I could hear some coins rattling around inside. I've been looking for a way to get it open--it didn't come with a key. Finally, my husband took a grinder and ground off the rivets that held the bottom on.
    I was thrilled to find the silver dimes inside(dates on the coins: 1934, 1951, 1956, 1958, & 1960).

    WTG, sweet find.
I sometimes come across 'piggy banks' and if locked I use a bread and butter knife to get the money out.
I insert the knife and tilt it at an angle, a bit of a shake and the coins come sliding out , to add to this... the 'bank' is held upside down

    Cheers

Hi Kiwi---I tried everything I could think of to get that bank open....It has little 'teeth' by the slot (where the coins go in) that fall down when the bank is upside down, so I couldn't shake the coins back out that way. I tried picking the lock with a bobbie pin, but finally gave up and had my husband use the grinder. I looked through that little hole on the bottom of the bank and could see that Mercury dime, so I had to get it OPEN!!! It was a nice surprise to find those other silver dimes!
    Thanks guys!!

Talked to an old guy a long time ago that had purchased a small but heavy old safe. No way to open it, but he eventually broke it open. Six old coins inside and some paper money! Didn't ask him what he paid for it but one of the old coins was a 2 1/2 dollar gold coin. Of course the reason for buying it was the rattle of possible coins inside and it paid off for him. Your find is just another example of a cache (however small it was)....

    Sweet!

I have two old banks similar to that one. Can't get them open for ****. One looks like a book, the other looks like a barrel. I don't think there are any coins rattling around in them though.

Good story, idigdirt! I would love to find an old safe at a garage sale---Just the speculation of what might be inside would make me buy it, too!

You better find a way to open those banks of yours, Hombre....What if there's some really old paper money inside?!
The thrill of getting those silver coins out of my little bank was almost as good as digging them up with a detector!

Thanks for the comments, idigdirt and Hombre de plato flaco.
