My roommate has gotten jealous of my knowledge of valuable things and wanted to go out hunting this morning, I found an awesome estate sale close by on craigslist so I woke him up and we headed out. It was an awesome home that was so retro 50s it wasn't even funny. The sale was run by a company and was very pricey on most things. I was looking in a display case of jewelry and coins and asked about some proof franklins, $26 a piece, I laughed on the inside and continued looking. Next to the coins were 2 spoons I asked to see. One was a monogramed silverplate which I passed on but the other was a 1921 treasure sterling spoon priced $6, snatched that up quick. Went around the house admiring the vintage items and found some older books. Started going through and found a first edition 1899 Poems by Ralph Waldo Emerson book which I got for $1. I haven't found a real value on it yet but alot of universities use his poems in philosophy classes.

All in all a good day

I went with a friend to estate sale 2 weeks ago in his neighborhood and we only bought a few tools because the company that the family had hired wanted full price on everything,but the funny thing was ,this week on trash day they had a TON OF STUFF out at the curb and there was allot of people going thru it at the curb.

I find that some of the best bargains at estate sales whether run by a company or family members are books.

I live in a University town and boy do Professors like to collect books, and most that collect are published also. Last week the Estate sale I went to was a Professor of English, must have been over 1000 books. Books were double stacked in the three book rooms. A lot of them were in Spanish so I did not know what I was looking at, but the way they were picked off they must have been good. Oh yeah Hard Back books were $2, on the second day 1/2 price. The shelves were bare 1/2 way through the second day.

I think that books are about the only bargain when I come across estate sales that are run company run. I usually grumble through them looking for things the company may have missed so I can laugh at them.. ( On the inside ).
