I think you're right, looking at the butt end of that thing, if the Warden finds it, whipping is your least problem

its for talking to bossy security guards with-- by the way its not a riding crop at all --its called a sap or black jack --the tips loaded with lead --used properly it will crack yer skull quite nicely. don't ask me how I know about -switch blades , brass knuckles and other fun toys like that black jack.

hand goes thru the strap --and grips the end close to the strap (strap prevents it being taken from you / used on you )==the knob part is lead loaded fer cracking their skulls -- normally a good hit to the skull tames even the "tough guys" if not repeatedly strike as often as needed till they fold up -- shots to the knee caps and elbows and groin area with this little gem are also quite painful as well
