    Yard sale coins

had surgery the other day and was not up to going out today. my daughter wanted to run to Best Buy to use up a coupon that would expire after today. Before doing so, she says that a yard sale nearby has coins. 5 minutes from the house and not that far out of the way from Best Buy. anyway, we stop by and the guy says most of the good coins were sold. i asked to see what he had left, and he goes into the house and brings out a jar of coins. and two proof sets. Among the mostly foreign and wheat pennies, 12 Eisenhower Dollars, and 16 Susan B Anthony dollars, my daughter eyeballs a 1964 half dollar and a 1945-s Washington quarter. one proof set was a 1976 clad proof, and the other was a 1986 Ellis Island proof dollar and half. The guy starts telling my daughter how much each coin is worth - Eisenhowers $3.00, Susan B -$3-$5.00, etc. I ask him how much he want, and he says there is over $75.00 worth of dollars there....... by this time, my daughter has pulled aside the 64 half, 45s quarter, a 1935 buffalo, a 1900 V nickel, and 5 or six neat foreign coins. I grab the Ellis Island proof and ask "how much for this and what she has?" he looks at each coin and i am thinking he is going to come up with some high price. He says $15.00! before i say "i'll take it, my daughter (she is only 13) says "throw in all of the wheat pennies and i will take it". my mouth dropped as she said this and he said OK. while she was grabbing the wheaties (wound up being 39 total) she found a 1906 Indian Head penny. How much? $1.00 he says..... and we took it.

The half and quarter are woth the $16.00 we paid for everything.
The Ellis Island proof goes for $40.00+ on feebay.

Wow, I've never seen anything like that at a yard sale before. Only thing that comes close was a guy with a jewelry display case with a few halves and morgans that were way, way, way overpriced.

I've generally had to ask if they have coins in order to ever find coins at yard sales!

I like to let my Mother in Law do my negotiating. She will take a Sterling Taxco pendant that is marked 50 cents and offer the person a dime and they'll accept it. It's crazy but I like to have her around for those great deals!
