For that box of coins, I paid twice what he asked for.

Asking as usual at yard sales if they have any coins, the guy said he did, and brought out a small box filled with about a dozen each of silver dollars, silver half dollars, silver quarters, and silver dimes. Plus a bunch of Indian Head Pennies, Steel pennies, Jefferson nickels, handfuls of foreign coins, a few Buffalo & V nickels, and a couple of foreign bills. And a few newish $2 bills and a bunch of Eisenhower/Sacajawea coins that weren't worth anything more than spending money.

I started to organize and stack up the ones that I'd like to keep, to try to work out a pricing, when he blurted out that I could have the whole box full for $50. Yeah, unbelievable! He was more interested in just getting rid of it. I love a good bargain, but this felt like it was TOO low. So I said "You know, I think these coins are worth more than that, so how about I give you $100 for the lot."

I've never bargained *up* before, but I was still getting an incredible deal at the higher price, and he was mighty happy to get rid of them. I really paid $76 for the lot when you deduct the no-extra-value dollar coins and $2 bills.

Lots of random foreign coins with little probable value in there, but I did find some nice foreign silver. And while most of the American coins aren't particularly special beyond their silver value, I am drooling over the amazing Standing Liberty quarter that was in the batch. I've scanned it to show off this beauty.

*This* is why I've been going to yard sales all summer long! It takes a bunch of "no, no coins" answers before a mini-haul like this comes along!

That's a sweet SLQ for sure. I did the same thing to a 12 year old kid that was selling a boxful of playstation 2 stuff, game console, 18 games, plus about a dozen different contollers and a gameboy advance sp with 11 games and a few dvd's were in there too. His mom called him out of the house when I asked how much for the box. He said he wanted $10 but I gave him a $20 bill and made his day. He was smiling from ear to ear when I left.

Did the same thing 2 weeks ago. Already had agreed on $40 for some silver dollars and then the guy said "give me $50" for another stack of coins I had picked out. I handed him $90 and he hands me back 40, tells me HE MEANT $50 FOR EVERYTHING. I say this stuff is worth more than that and eventually he takes another 20 for the whole pile ($70 total).
