gold .925?

ok found a little baggie of necklaces all was junk except one said 925... so I got it all for 2 dollars... I saw the 925 inn the bag but i wasn't sure what it was because its gold looking as you see in the pictures below.

Tell me what you think.... its 10.3 grams which is kinda of light IMO for the size it is.

did you do the magnet test?
I do not trust anything marked ITALY. I see a lot of fake 925 & 14K
They may be stamped ITALY but I smell wontons
I will buy those all day long if I can get them real cheap.

looks like vermeil, gold over sterling silver.
however like cyberdan said, don't trust that Italy mark.
i have 4 or 5 chains i have bought that after closer inspection are sterling plated copper.
lots of counterfeit crap out there.
i passed on 2 thick Tiffany chains last weekend.
5 bucks each, but had what looked like very small rust spots on them.

Still might be OK. Even 14K clasps are attracted to my magnet sometimes. I have a VERY strong tiny magnet (the size of a pencil eraiser) hot glued to my loupe. Some clasps have a very tiny steel spring in them.

go to a CASH4GOLD place and act dumb. You want to sell this gold chain. They will test and give you the bad news. that it is silver or the real bad news that it is junk

Along with the OP's question, this is a follow up to a question I asked you several months ago. Remember a 32 gram, thick, hollow heart-shaped yellow gold pendant that was cloisonne? The story was the estate sale was of people who traveled a lot and it may have been purchased in Japan. It had 14kt stamped inside the bail.

Well, between greed and curiosity, I popped it open and took it to a local place that uses a type of machine nearly like yours. The bail turned out to be magnetic and the halves to the cloisonne heart test "not gold".

I have a growing number of necklaces, charms, and bracelets that either test not gold or that my strong rare earth will barely attract.... The good news is that I have less than $20 tied up in them and my next home garage sale, they'll earn at least most of that back as costume jewelry sales....

Between the Early Earlybirds, the grabbers, and the increase in fake stamps (thanks in part to Sam Moon), it's getting tough to find much....

To not get off the OP's question, too far, I'd say that the type of link isn't one that would have a lot of weight. When I first started Metal Detecting, I found a child's gold ring with the .925 stamped inside. It took me awhile to realize/learn the gold wash was just that, and I'd actually found a silver ring. I'd bet the troop at ARA refinery loves to get jewelry like that. They pay for the silver with their 10% charge, then maybe give you somewhere close to .90% down to 77% of their assay report. To their advantage, his gold wash type of jewelry amounts is too little to be paid for, but their refinery process will slowly get them free gold...

"Sam Moon" has all the "Bling" jewelry that sold at or below wholesale. A magnet sticks to it even though stamped .925..... The store is somewhere around Dallas...

Today I found a gold-washed broach. It was the very first piece of Napier, in all that I've seen, that had "Napier Sterling" stamped on the back. Paid 50-cents for it, and it weighs 19 grams. You find much sterling Napier?
