    Ring with "18ct"

After buying a 4"x8"-2" deep box of garage sale costume jewelry, there was an Opal ring in a nice high filigree oval mounting. Inside its band there were engraved markings of: "Oct. 17, 43" and a cast marking like this: "18ct".

Is the 18ct marking a different way to mark 18kt? What does it mean?

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Re: Ring with "18ct"

I'm not 100% positive but isn't the "Kt" as in 10-14-18-22 and 24Kt a term for metal purity and "Ct" a term used in stones for size/weight ? This morning I wasn't awake and now I'm to tired to think straight but I think that the size of the stone. Can anyone confirm this? Happy Trails, Woodstock

    Re: Ring with "18ct"

In a Internet search, I found that when marked on gold, CT and KT mean the same, but some countries like the UK use CT for gold purity.

    Here's another link:

Also, here are two rings I found in the costume jewelry. The 18ct is on the right, with stone an all, it weighs 3.5 grams.

Also, at three garage sales between Friday and noon Saturday, I found about 100 grams of .925 and a pieces of Sterling Napier.

Jewellry here in Australia and in the UK always has the ct mark instead of the kt and refers to the purity of the metal not the stone size. Stone looks to be a solid white opal with good colour. Very nice find indeed. Rubytuesday
