    Thrift store finds

Hello, 25% off day for students (every saturday) at the local thrift store. I got a turn of the century Western Union Ammeter (small print on the panel) for $19 and a set of 2 sterling weighted candlesticks for $26 (gonna try and trade them for bullion).

Those are neat finds. And to try to trade the candlesticks for bullion is a good idea......try it.

Are the dimensions of those candlesticks 2 1/4" X 2 1/4"? I keep records of what items scrap out at & they show that candlesticks of that size generally run between .4-.45 troy ounce. I'd guesstimate the pair would scrap around .9 troy ounce & probably would not have bought at that price.

candle sticks could be worth more then scrap depends on who's hallmark is on them..

I'm bad at guessing the scrap weight of weighted sterling. I bought them because they seemed to be in nice shape (no dents) and probably have a heavier coat. Also, the smaller ones seem to have more surface area to volume. If I can trade for some junk silver, I'd be pretty happy. The hallmark is "Duchin Creations". A guide like yours would be helpful for scrappers, Thanks

I think it's cyberdan that says to use 10% of the total weight as an estimate of how much silver an item will scrap at. When I first started I was pretty meticulous about record keeping, writing down dimensions & weights of each piece followed by what the item scrapped at. I eventually got lazy & stopped doing it once I got to the point where I could guesstimate without getting out my notebook.
