What are your favorite finds of 2013?

As I'm reflecting on my garage sale finds for this year, I was trying to decide which one was my favorite. I was also wondering what everyone else's on the forum were this year. I think it would be interesting to see a greatest hits of 2013 garage sale style. It would also be really cool for a newbie to see why we are so passionate about garage saling.

I'll start with my favorite and hope that you join in. Please post your favorite finds and pictures if you have them.

Here is my favorite: Picked up this one ounce 14kt gold bracelet at an estate sale for $5. It was sitting in a jar with a taped down lid and no one else realized it was sitting in there, even the person running it.

Offered them $5 for it and they took it. Everything on the piece was clearly marked 14kt. Had to stop the car on the way out of the community to catch my breath.

Mine was a Nazi flag topper found at a garage sale. Probably brought home by a soldier. I've never had trouble selling anything I find, but I'm going to keep this one for a while. My grandfather was in the war and it makes me think of him.

So far mine would be the salesman sample train coupler set. I have been offered over $2000.00 for it without posting it for sale. I just can't let it go...yet.

mine is the silver horse,guy from ny was going to give 450.00,waited for the check nevr came so i sold it local for 1000.00.paid one dollar at a yard sale about 8 blocks away from home

I dug a 1774 English guinea (gold) in January and yesterday a 1794 US Large cent. The 1794 is icky, but who cares? Best "deal" I bought was a French and Indian War powder horn with a pewter fleur-de-lis inlaid on the bottom. Best CRH was 10 real silver dollars from a teller three weeks ago. Five Morgans and five Peace type. The peace types included BOTH key dates, a 1921 and a 1928. All extra fine to AU.

Have to say me finding my white whale 2 uranium glass vases. Payed 3 for the pair. My best resale find is a lee hand loader 12ga loader. Paid a dollar made 40. Best metal detector find both this week 1884 indian head and a .925 silver ring. Lol the penny was my birth year 1984, and the ring fits my wedding finger. Now I have a band. Wife will be happy.

Mine was a 14k gold bracelet. Weight was 87 grams. Lady swore up and down it was fake. She had one sitting next to it that was fake. I paid $10 for both.



I sold off the charms for $1100 and put the bracelet in the sdb. Speaking of World War II, I got to go back home to Pennsylvania this year for my grandfather's 91st birthday. My mom found his hat and had it repaired to when he wore it. Seeing him was good.



That was probably the best thing.

60's-early 70's hot wheels track. Got 65 pieces
Of the 2+ foot sections and over 100 of the dark red/purple connectors, quite a few banked 180 degree turns and several original clamps all for $10. Loaded it all on Ebay, went to go lay doen for bed; then i came back and deleted the auctions. The next morning I gave them all to my son who is a huge Hot Wheels fan. His smile was worth more than an auction could ever bring me.

Great call! Had you sold them it would have cost you 10 times more trying to make up for that guilty feeling. You should make a deal they're his, but when it comes time to sell the money has to go towards something meaningful.

My favorite is an old brass and wood telescope & tripod. I don't have a picture of it right now but I will try to remember to take one and post it here. It was purchased at an auction for $65.

I also really like the bell below. I think this probably came off a schoolhouse or church. Also acquired at auction. Paid $60 for it and it now sits proudly in my living room. I love the eagle finial.

Back in June 2013 I went to the Baltimore coin expo. I found a contemporary counterfeit 1877 Seated half dollar "item" in a well known dealer's misc token binder. Paid about $40. It turned out to be something of a mystery. I showed it to dozens of well respected numismatists and not 1 person could definitively tell me what I had. It was confirmed to be non mint-made. The consensus was that it was a brass "die setup" for making counterfeit half dollars in the 1870s. The item itself was not an actual die but more of a trial piece, possibly used as a "model" for creating the actual die later on. It was not crudely made and the detail was very convincing.

I ended up selling it for an undisclosed amount at the Philly coin expo back in Sept. I sold it to a dealer who personally collects Seated half dollars. It is one of those things where you have to literally find the right buyer, as there might only be a small handful of people in the world who would want something like that. It is my favorite find of 2013 because it shows that if armed with a little knowledge and if you are willing to put in some hard work and research, you can do some pretty cool things! More of a personal accomplishment then anything else.
