Google K&J Magnetics, they have many in many different shapes and sizes. I think rare earth magnets for your intended use are overkill, any common magnet will work fine. Very little siverplate is over iron or steel anyways, it is usually over copper or zinc alloys. If your rare earth magnet sticks to something it can be hard to remove unless you have it in a little handle. Also, there really isn't a lot of silver out there that isn't marked, since it has been a law for a long time that all sterling must be marked thusly. If you are viewing a silver colored object and a magnet doesn't stick it really means little, since silver isn't often applied over magnetic metals.

Go to Harbor Freight and Tools they have a 10 pack of tiny rare earth magnets for $3 or $4. That is what I did.
