I rarely get to the estate sales on Fridays because of work, but today I happened to be driving right by one on my way to work, so I decided to stop in.
There was another big (well advertised) sale nearby, so most of the competition was waiting in line there while I was browsing with about two other people at this sale, which was the home of an artist and was a 60-year collection.
I focused on the bookshelves, on which hung signs that Paperbacks were $.50 and Hardcovers were $1.00. My take:
- Complete set of Avant Garde Magazine, which was a counter culture magazine that ran for 14 issues from '69 - '71 (damn hippies) and features some amazing photographs and art including that of John Lennon and even some nudes of Marilyn Monroe. The complete set is listed on some sites for $340-395, but a recent actualized price for the set was $180. I think my set is in better condition, though.
- First Ed, first printing of a book by George Bernard Shaw called "Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism and Capitalism" in a tight, ornate binding and covers. This book is listed for $40 on the nets, but again I think my copy is in better condition.
- A book of Howard Brodi's "War Drawings" from WWII and Korea, which was signed and inscribed to the artist who owned the house wishing him luck in his future artistic endeavors. I cannot even find this book online, but apparently Brodi was well-renowned for his war drawings.
In addition I got a bunch of other odds and ends and paid a total of $8.00 for the lot.
I think I'll keep all of it for a while, but it was a pretty darn good score.
