Unless you know something about the artist, I would say that the only thing to do is buy what you would hang in your house if it had no resale value. Personally, That thing hurts my eyes... I am definitely worse off for having seen it.

I don't know why, but I kind of like it. Not sure where you would hang a pic of an old man (bedroom would make it kind of uncomfortable - piercing eyes).

I'm guessing Alpine German artist - that's what the hat is telling me. I'll look up German Portrait Painters and see what I can find.

I agree with dejapooh..buy it only if you like it…just in case its worthless to others. I'm like you, its kinda cool. Although that old man resembles NO ONE in my family, he would stir conversation among visitors to my home. Oh, and I have 20-30 framed pieces from local thrift stores because one day, one day, I will have a wall to hang them if I don't sell them! But I only spend more than $40 IF I know something about the artist. Just picked up a signed exhibit poster for Robert Natkin…should be worth a bit more than $100. Bought it for $10 at Goodwill.

This one only has curiosity value, not a terribly skilled painter, and just not an appealing subject to most buyers. I also think it is modern judging by the vibrance of the colors and the handling of light -- looks like they are reproducing the effects of photo studio lighting, but could be wrong. Also, the wood strainer bars, staples, and back of canvas are pretty clean and modern looking. I am seeing pure 70's kitsch... echoing everyone else in the thread, buy only if you like.

Ahem ahem ahem

I would advise you all not to speak negatively of this jolly fellow's portrait if you'd like something other than coal in your stocking this Christmas.

If the frame is real wood, it would set you back far more than $45 in most shops.

I was getting a German St. Nicklaus as well.
