Look for the places that get the most worn. On a ring, it will be on the bottom of it, along the edges. If it is plated, that is where it will be coming off. Is that a chip in it? If it is, and it's the same under it, then it would probably be real gold. Also, if you rub in on something (I have a stone, but I am guessing any rough surface will due), you can look for silver color under it. If it doesn't, then good chance it is gold.

I'm no expert, but if I had to guess, I would agree with silverdollarbill. Looks very soft and I would GUESS high karat, possibly 22k.

Looks like Mahatma Gandhi to me, though I don't know what the no.9 would represent. I would vote gold too.

I would guess some type of Asian character & writing, take it somewhere and have it checked out. Great find!

Sure looks like gold to me. I once found a gold & diamond ring. Back before the days of cell phones I'd always do my phone calls from the pay phones with the call card. I did a load of air travel from the later 80s to mid 90's. I was waiting for a flight at Chicago's Midway and was making some calls before I took off and the payphone I chose I noticed as I was hanging the phone up there was this ring on the top of the phone. Sure thing it was a 14K ring with 5 small round diamonds in a row. I'd walk the airports on layovers all the time, looking down on the ground and pickup pens, lighters, change etc. I remember I found a sterling bracelet once in an airport. I'll bet the custodians at airports find all kinds of stuff at that job. This is a habit I have from hunting stone artifacts from a young age to a pastime I enjoy to this day. I naturally look at the ground almost everywhere I go still. In a thrift store or antique shop, I had to get in the habit of looking high, low and in between.

Wear it and see if your finger turns green in the morning lol. Looks like gold and I think the 9 is really some kind of diploma. Maybe a class ring of some sort but definitely not a "Jostons" made ring

It does look soft and worn like gold but.... the 3rd pic of the stamp where you see all of the different spots of color do not look like gold. I have seen a few rings over the years like this and as soon as you put acid on it to gold test it, it turns green immediately (not gold). Hope this is not the case here and yours is gold. It looks 14K by color...18K and higher is way more yellow in color...

Weird. Would have pegged it as a crudely cast gold ring based on the pics. What was it, just plated?

Looking at it, looks like it might be from India, in some of the native script. They're known for 22k...

but then I read the follow-up from your friend who tested it.... Darned....
