Does anyone take their gold jewelry and instead of scrapping it have it custom-made into something else? I only did this once in the last year and I had some broken gold turned into a gold cross. I didn't pay very much for the scrap and the cross cost me $40 to have made. I think I can get a little more over Scrap for it.

Now before I mentioned A furnace and I was going to melt my own bars. Which I will probably do with the Sterling because it sounds like fun. But I had a 26 g gold necklace that I paid six dollars for it was broken. I will be getting that back on Sunday hopefully. But I gave it to my jeweler and said here make me something cool and tell me later what it is! I said you're the artist and you like making stuff just surprise me and I'll pay you. So I have not gotten a picture of it yet but he said in a text today that it is a snook pendant and the bail is a fishing hook... Total cost to have it done around the hundred dollars or less because there should be some gold left over! Can't wait!!!

We had our wedding rings made out of a simple bracelet my wife was given when she was born. Really saved on the cost.

And for the record it makes it a lot harder to sell it! But it is a snook on a fishhook all 10 karat white gold!

Awhile back I took some old scrap gold and had a jeweler melt it down into a nugget and apply a gold shank for wear. It's pretty neat,Of course I would never wear it!My luck I would lose it somewhere and one of you guys would find it:laughing7:Now I want to take it out the safety depo box so I can look at it.

That is great work! That would be very hard to sell, its beautiful!

you're not kidding. I do want to keep it but I put it online and see if I can get any offers. He's going to make me a custom necklace to go with it so we'll see the necklace is going to be I think 35 or 40 grams.

So riddle me this: If I melt down some gold to rework into something else, I should try to make it all the same carat-weight, right? I mean, I have a bunch of 14k items, I should not mix in any 18k or 10k? Does it matter?

Yeah from what I was told you want to keep it the same because if you mix 14 karat with 10k it will make it 12k. if you mix 18k with 14k you're going to have 16k.

What's wrong with 12K gold or 16K gold? 12K is better than 10K & 16K is better than 14K no? I personally like 16K gold as its better (more pure) than 14K & stronger (more durable) than 18K.

Nice snook pendant. I have a similar one that is a largemouth bass that swings from a large hook in his mouth with a diamond chip for an eye. The wife had it made for me probably 12-14 years ago when gold was $300 an ounce or somewhere near that.

Nice! I was thinking about having a dime and put in the mouth but change my mind I guess I could still have it done. The guy wants to custom make a necklace for this one too but I would need 40 g of scrap gold. So we'll see about doing that later on.
