Thanks! The bottom has a date code of 1963. Still in the box (marked $1.95), never been lit, the wick is still unburned.

THANK YOU!!!
It was that feeling I love - it was 27 degrees outside in line waiting - you get into the house and you're the first person into a room, and there on a coffee table it sits. The guy was a Lt. Col / Major Air Force quartermaster in the 60s. I still haven't gone through the massive box of slides I bought, but I've already found a bunch that were taken in Saigon. Also some 8mm tapes that I don't have the projector to view. Another dude got the best box it looked like, but I got there in time to grab the second :)

Very nice find. I don't think I've seen one with a Vietnamese unit's insignia.

Thanks! Are you a dealer? I am happy to wholesale out the slides. I have a slide dealer I have sold lots to before, and I sent him a message, but haven't heard anything back. I went through all the slides and here is the count of what I have, all from 1963-1964. I also grabbed several super 8 films from Da Lat, Bangkok, and the Phillippines. If you are interested in any of it, pm me. I REALLY appreciate the help on the lighter - I would have NEVER identified it.

380: Vietnam, Saigon, Cambodia (?), Buddhist Temples; lots of street scenes; people; what appears to be a refugee camp; no combat, but soldiers and gear.

300: Europe, mainly Germany (East and West) but also Venice, Belgium, etc.

150: Okinawa scenes

50: Phillipines

100: Military Fair of some kind in D.C.

100: Camp Quapaw Boy Scouts

50: Parade in Leavenworth, KS and the Cornell U. campus

50: Disneyland and a big football game in California

Very nice lighter. I wish I could find a veteran's estate sale. I haven't been to any real good sales in a couple months and absolutely none with any militaria.

ps-Disney slides and home movies can go for good money. You may want to investigate what you have with completed listings.

Ditto dig's comment on the Disney slides. A couple of years ago, I picked up a box of miscellaneous photo stuff at an estate auction for $5. In the box was a small group of 35mm color slides of Disneyland from the early 1960s. Sold those on eBay for about $30, if memory serves.

I sold the lighter for a bit less than $500 to a Vietnamese person in the US who is starting a museum. The second and third highest bidders were from Switzerland. Also sold the same guy some 8mm tapes from the same estate for a couple hundred bucks. It took 5 days to get paid, but worth it!

This is the third item I have sold to a museum recently. Sold an atomic bomb game to the national museum of australia and an air circus flyer from the early 1900s to a local place.

Nice find. The poop didn't hit the fan until 64 with the Tonkin Gulf Incident. That soldier may have worked with US advisers at the very beginning of it all.
