I found this at an estate sale. It is approximately 1 1/2" on each side. Clearly military. Can someone read the German? And what is it -- with the two holes on opposite corners? A pen stand? A neckercheif slide? I think the people in this forum know more about identifying things than anywhere else. :icon_thumleft:

From a Googled page:
"Bruder Stokt die Glaser an Hoch lebe der Reservemann ("Brother raise your glass - long live the reservist").

I ain't doing the rest :)

I also managed to eke out a partial translation thanks to Google.

Zum Andenken an meine Dientszeit:

"In memory of my military service time"

I believe the side that reads "Train Batl. No. 16" indicates that he was a member of Prussian Train Battalion No. 16.

Thanks!! But what IS it?? Any guesses? The estate sale people thought it might be a pendant of some kind, but the orientations don't seem right and there is definite desk wear on the 'bottom' - although that may be just because it's been on a desk.

I have no clue what it is...but it looks like it's made from ivory?

I'd say you were right about it being a pen holder. Just my guess though.

It's porcelain. I know better than to buy ivory or anything else I can't sell on ebay, lol.

I can't find another pen holder like it but that seems logical. I wore google out looking for ceramic cubes. Maybe I should try some german keywords

I think Diggumup is correct; however one person you could ask is West Front, he has a great deal of knowledge as well on this.
