While digging through a little pile of flatware I found this cake server. It looked like it had a sterling handle. Sure enough it was marked sterling. Upon closer inspection it is marked "6 dwt sterling". I have come across silverware before marked with dwt and understand it is the amount of silver that was used to plate a certain number of pieces like 6 or 12. However this one just looks like all the other sterling handled things that I have come across. I found a few things marked the same online but nothing had a definitive answer. So I bought it hoping it was 6 dwt of sterling. Before I tear it apart what is everyone else's thoughts? Is it sterling or plated?

I would think it is a layer of sterling silver over a harder metal and some filler, much like a sterling silver weighted candle holder. I believe I am right, but can't claim to have ever tore one of those down. I think you do have a layer of sterling though. Good eye and catch.
