I don't know to be honest. My friend was offered some gold coins recently, they turned out to be fakes. Make sure you know what you're doing.

I agree with Smokey be careful they should not have a problem going with you to have them authenticated and research on value should be easy.

I know so little I've only bought a few slabbed and graded ones. Then got bored and sold them and got something else.

Are those the asking prices or what you think they might be worth? Either way prices are way off. Those can be easily bought at a very slight premium over melt. Sold prices on eBay for the 1995 1/4 ounce start at $360 raw, in original government packaging, or slabbed.

I’m not a coin guy - so all caveats. But I buy them (and lots of silver coins) from from friends/ coworkers / family. I pay spot or a little under spot unless research suggests it’s a valuable coin and then I send them to a coin dealer. A lot of ppl are uncomfortable dealing with commercial buyers and would rather just get cash from a friend and be done. I’ve found you really can’t go wrong paying spot for clean US coins. The foreign ones I would go 10% under spot.

The 5 dollar gold coin (1881) is currently running between 375-475 in the condition stated. I'd take any "condition grades" determined by a layman with a grain of salt. It never hurts to own a Red Book of Coins so you can at least know how the grading levels are set for coins. They even have a phone app which has excellent color photos with condition examples.

I'd start there before you start handing cash over. It could be a great find/investment if they are willing to be objective when taking a second look at grading.
