Happy 4th everyone! For starters, I do take our current health crisis seriously. I’m just having a bit o fun with the title to make folks giggle a bit.

Ok, cue the soundtrack. My wench (wife) and I hit the very first yard sale yesterday morning. One of only four. It was a moving sale of an old home and the sellers were pulling stuff out of the barn. Within the first minute or so I peak into a small box. Spotting a couple of very crusty silver shot cups I knew that they were sterling. Turning them over and seeing the tell tale mark I knew I found treasure. I began pillaging through the box which also had several books, a wooden thingy, and a newer small copper teapot. I spotted a tray that I was sure was a match and was correct. I also began pulling out more of the cups finding eight total and the matching tray. Score!! The seller says to me, “ I used to polish those up and put them on my mantle”. I ask her how much are they? She say $5.00!! I couldn’t pull my money out fast enough! After we get home later in the morning, I look at the marks closer and discover that they are Cartier sterling and a complete set as well. As you can see, they polished up beautifully and has a total weight of 11.475 ozt. Not a bad days plundering!! 🏴 ☠️

Truly a haul worthy of a pirate! Cartier, too. Should you decide to sell, it should fetch a substantial premium over spot.

Good to know that there are still some bargains out there. I came across small amounts of sterling during the previous two weekends.

Isn't sterling items like that usually plated?

Is the 11ozt total weight or calculated weight?

What does the 65 / 7 1/2 mark mean?

I see quite a few items around my area like this, I just have no knowledge of how to assess an item's value...

Thank you!

Sterling items aren’t plated. I’m wondering if you might have meant weighted. These are not weighted either. They are all sterling from top to bottom with no added weight. That would make the 11 ozt an actual weight. The other marks are either pattern marks or something of that sort.
