Got a nice chain today
Went back to the beach even though I knew it was going to be just about high tide. Didn't care, just wanted to get out there. I didn't end up finding a whole lot at the beach, maybe a dollar in change. From there I decided to head over to the harbor area where some homes are as they have some swimming beaches there. after waiting out chest deep into the water for a couple hours and finding next to nothing I decided to come up into the dry part of the sand. As soon as I broke free from the water I picked up a signal at the water line for the chain you see pictured below.

Oh, by the way, the chain is 9 grams of 14 karat gold and it's 29 inches long

Well bummer. Took the chain to a jeweller and was told that although the chain is marked as 14K Italy it is not gold. Looks like somebody had been given a swap meet special for a present.

Did they test it with a gold tester? Most Italian gold jewelry is 18k.

I'm not sure what test he did to be honest, I think he said something about it turning green so I'm guessing it was an acid test. plus the necklace itself is just slightly magnetic which is kind of a giveaway that it's not gold.

I have a chain that's broken... how do you test for it to see if it's gold if I don't have acid? It doesn't stick to magnets.
Always check rabbit holes when metal detecting... you never know, there might be karats down there.
