Hello Everyone,

I am thinking about purchasing an Ace 250 as a back-up detector. I want to have a detector in my car all the time for spur of the moment hunts and for hunting when I am waiting for my daughter to get out of sports practice, etc. I tried one out today at a local detector shop, and it seemed fairly straight forward to use. Seemed like a lot of bang for the buck. All opinions welcome. I also looked at the Whites Coinmaster, but felt it was flimsy and not as value loaded at the Ace.

My question is about the 9X12 coil. Has anyone ever used one, and if so with what success and under what conditions? Also, how does it pinpoint - accurately? Or, is it difficult to get the target in the sweet spot of the coil? How is its depth compared to the standard coil? What does it do the balance of the detector? Does it make it really nose heavy?

I mainly plan on coin hunting at local parks. If I find a good place to find coins, then I will come back with my XLT. Thanks.

Darryl

The 9 x 12 coil works great on the ACE 250. It maintains its sensitivity to small targets and pinpoints well. The shallow targets I pinpoint with the toe of the coil, the deeper ones I use the center. If using the toe for the pinpointing, listen to how fast the audio cuts out. That usually tells you if it is a coin and how deep it is. The faster it cuts out, the better.

Good luck!

Garrett detectors confirmed my thoughts - the Ace 250 coils are all concentric. No DD coils exist for the ACE 250.

For your purpose the standard coil works just fine. You are getting a lot of bang for the buck with an ACE 250, so why spend the extra dough when it is not essential? The secret to operating the ACE is to keep the sensitivity set at a 4 or 5. Any higher and you won't get any better results, just some falsing and a lot of extra noise. Good choice. Monty

Treasure_Hunter -

Here is a copy of the email I got from Garrett. They seem to think they only make concentric coils for the Ace 250:

"Hello Darryl,

The ACE 250 coils are not DD coils, we don’t have a DD coil available for the ACE series.

Thanks,

Kellyco may make one, but my original inquiry was if Garrett made one since a dealer told me that the coils that came with the Ace were DD. They did not look like DD coils to me, and I was right as confirmed by Garrett. Glad to know that there is an aftermarket one available if I ever decide I want one.

Darryl

Sorry if I misunderstood your question, I based my reply on your "No DD coils exist for the ACE 250" comment above.... I didn't know you were referring to Garrett...

Treausre_Hunter - No problem. I am sure I could have been clearer in my post. But, the good of it all is that I learned that one does exist is I ever want to get one! HH!
