This was an air test to get a baseline number for the different coins. Different soils will cause numbers to possibly be higher or lower than the test numbers.

I am surprised at the vdi numbers for the war nickel. I thought they would be a lot higher. War nickels, which were minted from about the middle of 1942 to 1945 didn't contain nickel. They were instead 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese. I have found a few of these, and they come out of the ground almost as shiny as a silver coin and give a belltone on my GTI1500.

Don't forget that not all coins in the ground are flat. Coins tilted would give different readings and could cause you to pass some by.

I dug a war nickel recently with the AT Pro and it was 50-52.

Thanks for the baseline numbers, but as others have mentioned, don't expect those numbers to hold 100% true in the field.
I recently found a Barber dime that is well worn and it rang up at 75, similar to some clad dimes I was recovering the same day.
The pennies I was finding were in the 70 range.

My numbers were lower than I expected across the board on everything I was finding at this particular site...

Not to far off the numbers I get in the ground. Running in pro mode with the soil rated at 85, I get the following.

Quarters 85
Dimes 81
nickels 51
old pennies. 80
zinc pennies chatter 76-79

fyi i ran my at pro over my 14k necklace and the numbers bounced from 30 to 25 to 14 never went above 30 and my 14 k ring hit as a nickel at 52 53 so does all gold hit this low?

I found a 14k 5.6 gram gold band that read 63. A 4 gram cross read 42. In air tests gold read from 38 to 63. I tested gold from 0.5 grams to 5.6 grams. The heavier the ring, the higher the number. Most rings tested in the fifties.

Air testing my wedding band, it rang in at 62, my wife's at 41. If you want to be sure to grab the gold, you better dig it all...

Gold is the one thing I have yet to find with my AT Pro. I tested my 14k wedding ring and it rang up as a nickel @ 53 most of the time. I think to find gold you really have to just dig everything. It does seem like gold will never ring up in the higher numbers. Can someone prove me wrong? What does a $5 gold coin ring up at with the AT Pro?
