First Day, need some help

Ok, had my first day out with my first detector, Garrett GTA 1000 Ultra.........found a little pocket change and a metal bracket at the ball feilds. My question is, how do i adjust the volume on that thing? From everything i have read it says the arrows will fix the volume.....nope.....ha ha........i finally got it back loud enough to hear by hitting the operate button but just not sure exactly what i done...any help would be appreciated........while im at it.......Depth, Threshold, Tone........when searching parks and such what kind of settings should i use? what kind of settings for historical sites? or the beach(heading there in a month)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I got this unit to get me going and i really want to put the money into a good new unit if i can get the hang of it. Thanks in advance Tbone
