Depends on where you are and what you are looking for. I bought mine in the middle of May this year and it has paid for itself 3 times over already in finds. Give MetalDetectingStuff a call.

I'm by Lake Michigan and do a lot of beach detecting and would like to get closer to the water and not have to worry about dropping it in the water

yes, I think its worth the money. Very easy to learn and user friendly.
