That's strange that the volume control does not work. There is nothing special that you need except the correct impedance to shut off the external speaker which most all volume controls supply just fine. Are the made for a particular Sony product or generic ear buds made by Sony?

Yep RobRieman, after reading the fine print these buds are made specifically for iPhone. I thought any would work as long as (vol) control is between speaker and connection. Oh well lesson learned.

Yeah iPhones have an odd ball tip,ring,ring,sleeve 4 position 3.5 mini jack. The good news is just about any other ear buds you buy will work!
