A little trivia here. The Indian Head penny is really Miss Liberty. For a few years they were made with nickle as an alloy and were called Nickels or Nicks. I think they only had that for something like four years so all Indian Heads are not going to read the same ID number and definitely the nickel alloy ones are going to read much lower than copper. One chart says 61. This might be a little low and no doubt it refers to the one with the nickel alloy.

Edit: nickel alloy for five years 1859-1864

Most of the Indian heads I've dug defiantly come in on the low side of a penny, 75 to 79. So yeah, you gotta dig it all.

Your better off covering the screen with duct tape and trust your ears.

The 1863 Indian I found was a med tone but broke into high tone a bit if that makes sense to you. So far I've dug 15 ih cents and the oldest is a 1863 and it is a lot thicker than the rest of them. Most of them are repeatable high tones. I love the green patina on them.

This is what I wrote last summer when I found a boatload of IH's

-The IH's almost always showed up around 70-77. There wasn't a number that they were always at. The wheaties showed up around 80. The deeper IH's (5-6"s) bounced around a little but they rang in exactly like a Zincoln for the most part (only 2 Zincolns for the three days I hunted this site). My ground balance was around 80. I GB about every 20 minutes or so and the lowest in this yard it got to was a 77 and a high of 83. The nice thing was you knew it was an IH because in pro zero they would be kind of quiet and not a booming signal like a 2 inch deep zinc lincoln. Enjoy!

Hope that helps...

Found two last week, 1905 and a 1887, they were both very scratchy, in the 73-78 range
