You can detect salt water areas with the pro. Gold is no bueno around salt water probably because each machine uses a different frequency. The gold is using a frequency that lets it detect small nuggets and at a better depth than probably the pro could.
If your're planning on just general metal detecting go with the pro.

CAn't really go wrong with either unless you want to detect in salt water, then use the Pro. I have the Pro and love it. It finds gold really well too.

Having owned both I'd go with the Pro for Illinois. The AT Gold is really good at finding the tiniest things, including gold. I think it's better suited for small gold prospecting out west. That and I prefer the way the Pro sings in pro mode to even give beginners an idea of what's going on in the ground around them.

However, if you're earring hunting, go with the Gold!
