Have read so much about the railroad tags for baggage, load identify and others here is one that is called a ( Brass Check). These are issued to the employee on his or her first day and without it you couldn't get your pay check. When reporting for duty the conductor had a paper form and your number went in first then your name. This RR had a paymaster who came around to the different starting points at shift change. Because they work 24 7 there would be at least three different paymasters and since this was not that easy to do the youngest person would draw the short straw. The number of people working in this department was great and the paymaster was from a different department so there was no way for him to know all the employees.The checks would be in numerical order in the box so the first thing that was asked was let me see your brass check and then only after finding it would your name be asked then you had your pay check.
