I use a large fanny pack, main pockets holds my trowel and I throw my trash finds in there also. Other compartments hold a small piece of plastic for dirt, its orange so it can be used as a emergency marker if needed. Other pockets hold large wire cutters for small roots, spare batteries, LED flashlight, repellent, snacks. I'm going to have the local canvas shop sew a water bottle patch on it. It's behind my back doesn't hang up on anything, but I can still reach and get my digger easily. My relic shovel is about 40" long and its set up with a sling so its carried over my back like a rifle, again it doesn't hang up on stuff when I'm in the woods.

I use an old us army kit bag my dad bought at a surplus store when i was little. Nearest image i can find is this:

Thats a replica - mine is olive green and far more heavily weathered. Straps over the shoulder and lays flag like a newspaper against your hip.

Wife calls it my 'army purse'

I use a backpack and it had clips on the side for my knife and pinpointer.
