Good reference book for coin identification & value????

So – basically, if it’s not a wheat, a merc, or a buffalo nickel…..I wouldn’t be able to tell you what the heck I dug up.

Share what are your favorite coin identification & values reference books.

I LIKE A STORY as well.
So – Any book that will help me ID the coin AND give a bit of background history on it as well…..that’s be a plus!

What do YOU use?

Thanks!

Gary,

You're up way too early.

If you want something in book form, there's nothing better than Redbook for U.S. coins and Krause for foreigns. I check values online because the books can't keep up with the changes. If you are modestly good at grading, the PCGS site is a good reference for coin id and prices. But you need to understand, the prices there are for PCGS graded coins. As a rule of thumb I usually take about 50% of the PCGS price to put me in the ballpark. Here's the link ... http://www.pcgs.com/prices/

The subscription "greysheet" is what most dealers use for pricing. It's published weekly and displays the "ask" and "bid" for a particular coin in a certain grade. The "sell" price usually falls somewhere in between. If you have a local coin shop, they usually have this resource and may be able to help you out.

And then you could always post pictures in the coin thread here and get all of our opinions. ;D

Forgot to add if you like stories and histories of coins, check out this site. http://www.coinfacts.com/

Hmmmmm....
I just noticed that. My forum time is off. It's telling me your reply is at 7:15am....when in fact it came through at 10:15am. 3hr difference. I posted my question at 8:39am....not 5-something (though I am up every morning @ 4:50am!)
