This isn't so much MD related....but it is research related.

I happened upon this in my area. I've driven by here thousands of times and never knew about this.

Here. Look at this pic:
ScrantonTunnel.jpg

That's from 1939.
Clearly it appears as though the train tracks disappear into a tunnel entrance.

Now look at the same location.....but modern day:
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&i...1.400425,-75.652564&spn=0.003549,0.01236&z=17
There it is.......still disappearing into the hillside.

Whaddaya think? Old coal shaft? I betcha it is sealed.
Would it be worth MD'ing? Or would it likely be too trashy with iron?

Either way....it is interesting!

Don't think it's a mine shaft or tunnel...too close to that creek and it woulda flooded. The terrain seems kinda level right there. I'd check it out tho...coulda been a RR siding where there was a building.

No. It's not level. It's quite steep there as a matter of fact.

I'll still go check it out though.

What I think you're looking at is a rollback area.

This is used when they need to get a car out of the mid section of a train. They roll the cars back to this location and then disconnect the one they need and move it out to the secondary track.

I know this site very well. It was a favorite party spot growing up. It is the 1905 tunnel. It is a mile long and ends up behind the McNichols School that is located in front of Brook St in South Scranton. They re-opened the track for the Trolley that goes to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. If you go down there be careful not to get caught. The Park Rangers from Steamtown Patrol the area and will fine you. Been stopped several times as a youth.

If you play around with that Google map you can get a horizontal view from the expressway that clearly shows the tunnel entrance. Frank
