Some people find it convenient to have a hard copy of the Topo map. Strictly speaking, you don't absolutely need a hard-copy printed version, as you can find just about anything on line nowadays. Just click on any of these commercial sites, to see what your area looks like:

* http://www.topozone.com/viewmaps.asp
* http://www.digital-topo-maps.com/

Those and other map sites will display your local area topography, and if you spend a little time at your computer screen, that may be all you need. They can sell the maps to you at a price a little higher than the USGS cost, but the USGS Topo maps are somewhat more valuable since you can see the date it was created and revised.
