ok do you think I can do it?...... :tongue3:

I am trying for one of each year 1859-1909.........no "S" for 1908 and 09. So 51 total is needed

this is my 3rd yr detecting, and this is what I have dug

year one: 12
year two: 57
year three: 86...so far

so that is 155 total I have found, and I have 42 of 51 to complete a dug set. I don't think the 1877 is gonna happen, but I think several of the others are def possibilities. Of the hard years to get, I have found these
1860
1861
1863
1865
1867
1870
1873
1874
1875
1876
1878
1879

so I am only lacking 1859, 1862, 1864, 1866, 1868, 1869, 1871, 1872, 1877

I just thought it would be really cool to actually complete a set of ones I found in the ground, sure hope I can find these last 9 :laughing7:

Let me get this straight.......you have dug 155 Indians and only 7 wheaties!? I find that very odd. One other thing, how did you arrive at the $45K figure for results of your detecting (total searched)? I would say that is outstanding for 3 years of detecting!

Anyway, an admirable goal you have....hope you get it complete. Personally, I'd be happy just to find my first IH!! ::)

Those 1877 are out there just not as many here is what Rick Snow said

The 1877 Indian Head Cent is known as a key date coin of the series. There were 852,500 pieces reportedly produced for circulation, although Rick Snow suggests that only 200,000 coins were struck. Whatever the number is, the coin is rare in all grades.

Most of the coins produced experienced significant circulation, making uncirculated coins infrequent. Choice examples are always in demand and finding the right price may require several years of intensive searching for the conscientious collector.

The 1877 Proof Indian Head Cent had a mintage of approximately 900 coins. This is comparable to the proof coin production for other coins of the era, however the rarity of the circulation strike transfers some desirability to the proof version, granting a premium.

I have been doing the same thing you have been doing for several years. I had about 200 indians in my first 2 years of detecting and thought I would see how much of a set I could complete with them. I keep all of mine in a Dansco album. I do the same thing for Mercury Dimes and Wheat Cents. I haven't updated ANY of these albums in about 2 years, though.

Here is what I am missing:

59, 60, 61, 62, 64 - I know I have found some of these fatties recently.
64, 64L - I have plenty of these, just haven't put any in and I never look for the L.
68-73, 75-77 - I might have found some of these recently
1886 Variety 2 - No clue on the difference.
08S, 09S - Still none of these

19 spots are empty in my book, of which several I have found and just never put in. Oh yeah, there is an 1864 Fatty and an 1864 Copper so you know to look for both.
