Strange Gold stamp in ring

My buddy showed me a ring that had 18k on 14K stamped inside the ring it looks good but, I have no idea what that means. I googled it and it thinks I'm miss spelling it. Do you mean 18K or 14K(dang GOOGLE). Anyone have a clue?

Although i've never heard of it myself, I did a quick search and found a couple rings that were yellow 14k with either a rose or white 18k plating over it.

I can only assume that's what it means.

I'd guess the same; the band is 14k while whatever is above the band is in 18k.

Usually indicates an 18K head set on a 14K band.
