You wouldn't have got away from the bell tone buying a more expensive Garrett. I bought the Garrett GTAx550. I also own a Garrett Ace150 that my wife uses. The bell tone is no better on the more expensive machine. Right out of the box on factory settings, that was the first thing I noticed. False bell tones on one swing, then a correct or broken tone on the return swing. It also chattered quite a bit. Finally got rid of most of both by lowering my sensitivity. To its credit, I had tone ID on my White's XLT that wasn't much better, but I could program it out. Don't have that option with my Garrett. And there are areas where the bell tone isn't as bad. Guess it depends on the soil. Anyway, still could do without the bell tone.

Hi all. I'm about ready to shop for a good detector. I did some research on different Whites models. I don't know if I want to spend a lot of money on a Spectra V3, since I'm new to the hobby. I've been a member since 2006, but never got a detector...well almost. Back then, I wanted a DFX. I got laid off and had to set my dream aside. Now, I'm laid off, again. This time, I'm not putting my dream on hold. I want a good detector that does it all, without having to have a college degree to figure out how it works. I have read many reviews on the different models, and everyone seems to be happy with the models they bought. However, it does get me confused, as to what is best for me. Any feedback would be most appreciated. I know TNET has a great many seasoned detectorist that are always nice and willing to help others. I get excited when I see all the beautiful treasures everyone finds with their detectors. I want to find and post treasures, also. I don't care if I find trash, as that's all part of the hobby. My dream, as that of many, is to find gold, silver and jewels. I know I'm a dreamer, but sometimes dreams do come true. ;D

I have owned two Whites detectors, the last being the XLT Spectrum, Series E. I believe they are good detectors but, out of the box new, over priced. Just go on Ebay and see how many used White's detectors are out there. If you want a White's, buy used....They are selling for half the price of new.

The whites MXT is a great detector with the 3 different programs. I run mine in the prospecting mode and swear by it.
I just bought the Minelab Excalibur 2 to hunt the water with out fear of getting the MXT wet. The majority of the gold you will find will come from water sites. Fresh or salt water bathing areas or beach. I will say don't buy on ebay get your detector new from a good dealer that way you wont have issues with warranty's or support. Just look at my prior post's all are MXT finds. Good luck and keep us posted.

That sucks man, I have no problem finding silver with my Ace..And have found some right at 6-7 Inches..I normally find at LEAST 5 bucks in clad for a few hours of hunting..Sounds more like some bad locations..But again..your in Canada..so things may be different..

I will admit one thing thou..Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night hearing that beep :laughing9:

Hi Broken knee. Thanks for your reply. I did take a look on e-bay,and I saw what was available. I'm not well versed on all the models, so I think you're right about buying from a dealer, especially if you're new at the hobby. I would feel more secure, I think. I looked at more reviews, also. The MXT gets high ratings. Some guys complained that the MXT was noisy. Others said to adjust the gain and fool around with the knobs to avoid the noise. The most important thing was to learn your machine, and the sounds. The sounds are telling you that there is something in the ground. You just have to know if it's a nail, pull tab or a coin by the type of sound it makes. I appreciate your, and RickyDs' replies. I will keep you posted on what I decide to get. I am leaning toward the MXT. It sounds like a great all around machine that will find me some wonderful treasures. ;D Thanks , again for your help, Broken Knee...you, as well, RickyD.

hope your happy with the F2 but I gotta tell ya having owned a F2 and a 250 at the same time, side by side the Garrett wins. Its has more features, better discrimination, and overall build quality is better and cheaper to run. F2 takes 2ea 9v vs 4 aa batteries. Belltone is a feature and I can see how is could get annoying, but its telling you something the F2 won't. The shaft and coil on the F2 appear cheap the Ace has a nice durable coil, and its interchangeable with other garrett coils. F2 is not interchangeable with other Fisher coils and the connector is a cheap looking push in with a thin wire.

I sold my F2 and kept the garrett for my wife and brother in law to use and bought an F75 then an E-trac.

Dont' buy an E-trac though they suck, total trash, only detect an inch or 2 deep, only finds beer cans and nails..... :tongue3:

Personally if I were you I would just get a cheaper MD, then move up. I suggest a Tesoro Silver, or a Ace250. Most of us have two hobbies: detecting and the other is reading about detecting on TNET. Heck research is also a hobby. It is really two different things. I use to detect all the time, but my life has gotten busy. So now I don't detect much, but I do read TNET every week more than once or twice. If you go big on a purchase then don't put the time in to learn your machine, the money spent on the advance machine maybe a waste. Personally I would hate to know I had a big money detector just sitting in the closet....I would feel guilty. Buy one, learn it, and go detecting as much as life permits.

Jorge
