"Umteenth dumb question" Belt buckles

Still new and learning!!! What do you suppose happens to the rest of the belt when so many buckles are found. Do they rot away or what? I personally don't recall ever in my sixty plus years ever losing a belt, more or less just the buckle. I have however "found" several buckles, but never one that was attached to any material like leather or nylon. Seems like you would notice if your belt fell off while you were walking around. Duh Huh!!!

Maybe people throwed them away when they wore out and the leather or strings just wasted away? I wonder if they were used for other things outside like a dog collar?

As far as military belts and such, soldiers have been "losing" things they were tired of carrying for as long as there have been armies. Plus in the heat of battle or in the aftermath people would scavenge things like guns, ammo canteens etc.... maybe a pair of new boots, but the rest was usually left behind

That is what I always heard...just dropped to lighten the load. Some may have also been souvenirs taken from dead or captured soldiers. Natural materials will decay away.

Just a thought
