I went to an estate sale this morning and I have never been to one like this before. They gave you a number and let you enter in order. I was number 42. I was there mainly for the boy scout patches (which I did not get) and look at the civil war books. OMG they had hundreds of books in several rooms. The book shelves were full. Many first edition books from the 1800's. If it pertained to the civil war it was probably there. The prices were higher than I wanted to pay but I am sure they were still worth it. I did manage to buy a very large atlas with maps and drawings of battles throughout the war. It was only $15. The lady in line ahead of me asked the person how much for the civil war magazines. They were priced $.25 each. The lady said she would take $5.00 for all of them. I was sick because there were over 500 magazines. I am going to go back tomorrow as they will mark down what did not sell if there is anything good left. I guess I am not an estate sale professional. But it was nice to see all the books.

***WENT BACK TODAY***

Everything was marked down 50%. I bought two big boxes of THE CIVIL WAR NEWS (approx. 150). Included were about 20 CIVIL WAR TIMES ILLUSTRATED mostly dated 1960's and early 70's, NORTH SOUTH TRADER from the 1970's. I paid $3.00 for it all. I am sure there are some more surprises. Also got a 1930 JEB STUART book for $2.50, and an 1893 CONFEDERATE SCRAP BOOK for $10.00 and a 1st edition MAJOR-GENERAL J.E.B. STUART book for $10.00. Most of the really good books were already taken but there are still some good buys. Tomorrow should be even better as everything must go and will take offers.

Been there, done that.

A hot tip: Get there EARLY! It's great to be #1.

While the dealers are savvy they just may not have the money to turn the items you need fast, hence you get them.

I was %40-something once, and I ended up with a couple of killer carved chairs and a Syrian game board and inlaid table from the 1930s. All for a couple hundred bucks.

Re: Went to an estate sale this morning..... WOW!!!!

I've learn over the years, thanks to my best friends mother, that it sometimes pays to be the LAST person at an estate sale, she's made me some good fines on stuff from being the last person on the last day of the sale, you know before they take it all out to the curb/ or give it to Goodwill.
Last year I went to a estate sale about an hour before it closed and bought over $500 worth of stuff for one crisp$100 bill.It was an old wood shed in this guys backyard(the owner built it himself back in the 40's),and it had alot of old hand tools, newspapers from the 1940's,a couple of Sears catalogs and a fairly brandnew Brille Reel Lawnmower(about$300).
The only drawback was ,that we had to get the shed out of the backyard by that day,the good thing was the shed was on beams and was up off the ground,we tied a nylon strap around it an connected it to my buddy's winch and drag ed it out of the backyard,an hour later it was on a flatbed trailer to my friends home and from there we stared picking like it was Christmas morning. :hello2: :hello2:

Re: Went to an estate sale this morning..... ***UPDATE*** Final day finds

I went back to the estate sale today and every box you fill was only $3.00 so I filled what I could. The atlas was from Friday but the rest of these pictures are what I paid $5.00 total for today. They even had the extremely rare War of the Rebellion books for $4000 for the complete set. Just a tad out of my price range. lol

I was shocked to see this as an estate sale. A lot of these books should have been at a big auction. I have never seen that many civil war books at a sale before. I just got the lower end books. The high end books went to collectors who knew what they were getting.

I love estate sales,,,yours was like a tag sale and your number was how you got in...sometimes they are okay but just like those they open the doors and you hope not to be trampled. I look for the silver and gold items first. amazing how much sterling and 10kt stuff is out there for $1-3 dollars each...Hint, if you see lodge pins for a $1.00 each grab them, biggest majority will be 10kt gold...also look for those bags of costume jewelry cheap...have always found at least one good item in the bag...
