Hi! Welcome to T-Net! I don't know what the rules are for detecting in Ireland, but you may want to find out. We have a HUGE international community here and I've found the rules and laws, if any, vary from place to place.

What kind of detector did you get? Where do you plan on going, parks and playingfields? Farm fields? Castles (if you're allowed)? With so much history in Ireland you should do your research and find old homesteads, towns, forts, whatever.

There is a bunch of British guys on the forums that make finds from the Iron Age, Roman times, the Celts etc. The stuff they find is simpley mind blowing!

Good luck!

Hi, I bought a ace 150 from the uk and still waiting for it to get here, over 9 days. Cant wait to get out with it. I have three forts in mind that are not maped, just happened to met an old woman from the local mountains and she kind of directed me to where they are, so I am looking forward to finding them, never mind anything else lol. I know I'm not suppose to search there and it is her land.
I have found some old coins, one is 1766 an Irish half penny copper, George the 111 and some bottles and some clay inkwells a few years when a friend of mine was doing some landscaping. Ill post some photos of them soon.

Thank you so much for replying and I will take your advice.
The large photo is a copy of my coin. I wish mine was in that good of condition.

Silver-strands, whatever "dire sounding" rules you can find about Ireland, through your research, just be aware that they may only apply to public lands, not private farm land with permission.

This is a common mistake made by some USA hunters too: They read dire sounding rules for state parks (for instance). And assume ...... "oh no, I can't hunt the city parks in my town, because, afterall, they are within the state, and the state-rules say I can't". And when you point out to those people that those state-level laws, apply to only state land, they reply like this:

"well I read it, and it didn't say it doesn't apply down to the county or city level, therefore, I must assume it applies to the whole state".

And ironically, in one case, one guy even took this "pressing question" all the way to the state archaeologist! Who promptly informed him that "yes, it applies to all govt. land, at any level, even down to county and city". Doh! What did you expect, asking a typical archie, who hates MD'rs? This was a totally un-sustainable legal answer, but the dejected md'r didn't know any better.

Thus in your case, I'd read very carefully any laws for yourself, before going and asking bureaucrats. I bet you can certainly hunt your own land (afterall, you're looking for that ring your wife just lost RIGHT?? ::))
