In the eight years we have been having Diggin' in Virginia hunts.....

There have been rare and beautiful finds too numerous to list. This recent find at DIV XVII, in my opinion, ranks in the top 5 ever for a DIV. While not the most valuable dollar wise (I really hate putting a dollar value on such an artifact)its definitely the prettiest. It was recovered by a young man named James who comes from down around Richmond, VA. I was fortunate to see it freshly dug and James was shaking like a leaf. A truly beautiful relic.

The name is E.Graves. He was First Saergent of Co. "F" 37th Mass. Volunteer Regiment. The regiment left their winter quarters at Brandy Station, where the pin was recovered, on May 3rd 1864. Graves was shot in the knee in the Battle of the Wilderness on May the 6th. His leg was amputated and he died in the hospital in Fredericksburg, VA on May 21st. He is buried in Hatfield Mass. There is quite a bit written in a couple books about Sgt. Graves. One by his Company Commander Capt. Tyler.

What a FANTASTIC find. To have a traceable history attached to an item is amazing!! Those kind's of finds are why thousands of MDers go afield everyday.

Edwin Graves was a farmer in 1860, age 36, with several children, and a wife Ursula. By 1870, his wife is listed as a postmistress, living with her children and her mother-in-law. One of the children is Edwin Jr. Very nice piece, thanks for posting.
